This isn`t a colouring tutorial, it`s a colour tutorial. And really goddamn long one to boot.
Mainly the target audience are those who can use photoshop to some extent (though these tips hold even when coloured by traditional media) but don´t have much colour theory in their head.
And weird and confusing. I forgot half I wanted to say and it`s most likely full of typos.
...I´m not sure how many of these there is already but here`s one more. If this gets positive comments (crits are welcome to see what I could`ve made clearer) I might do one about colouring a full pic.
This is awesome and VERY helpful. I've been using less saturated colors for quite some time, but didn't know the trick with the opposite color shadows yet. I really gotta try it sometime.
I guess it also depends on how warm or cold the rest of the image is. Anyway, I'll definitely try and play with it a bit next time and provide a link back to this - since I'm convinced that there are many of us out there who can learn from this, too.
I´ve noticed that 16 Bits/Channel can make the file size larger (aparently it has even more colour range or keeps them brighter) and with that bug the computer. With photos and proffessional work it can be different (I´m sure they know better) but to those this tutorial is targeted, 16-bit isn`t exactly necessary.
Yeah, it`s always about the image as whole. That`s why rainbow colours can work on a character sheet, but when you try to put them on a image with a background and lots of other colours and then try to make the rainbow not jump out...
And I`d really appreciated if you linked this, because yeah, some others might need this too.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
This newsletter was "born" back in March 2007, from a conversation between ~Lareth and =FrozenStarRo, who with the help of their friends *Iardacil and *Sylwiaa , wanted to make something to promote known and unknown photomanipulators alike here on DeviantArt. As of September 2009 =ImaginaryRosse joined the project and will be helping us out with the weekly choices. While things have changed over time, the essence of the newsletter is still the same.

And the opposite colour shadow works pretty far, though I use pretty much blue shadows.
